This 48 minute video tutorial follows Joel from start to finish on how he photographed and post processed this black and white image of a saguaro cactus in the Arizona desert. Watch the behind the scenes as he goes into the field using a battery powered strobe to overpower the sun and illuminate the cactus while under exposing the background. Joel uses a 24mm tilt-shift lens to capture three plates to produce one file image that is stitched using Photomerge in Photoshop. Joel also captures three images on each plate to create a 32 bit HDR giving ultra smooth gradients in the sky to produce the Ansel Adams dramatic black sky in the the final image.
Joel graduated from the University of Arizona in 1984 with a BFA in Photography, and soon established a commercial studio in Denver, Colorado.
